My Favorite Trait from Pamela
Now my eyes are special to me because I believe that they are a trait that I inherited from Pamela. I now take special pride when I look into Baby B's big blue eyes because I feel this is our special gift from her!
Happy weekend Pamela's Girls!

Our Northern Exposure
We were around our warm & huggable Mommas so often and felt a simple, unconditional acceptance with her that left us a bit speechless at times when meeting the sharp eyes and comments of our father’s side of the family. Oh, I don’t question that they loved us – they just had a different way of showing it.
I felt like it was especially hard for me because CiCi really was the picture of perfection (I can seriously see you rolling your eyes, CiCi) but for tomboy me with skinned knees, stringy hair and overactive, gangly limbs - I often didn’t feel that I weighed in well on the “southern offspring” scales.
But as the years have passed I have come to wonder about some of these mysterious forebears. What they were like?... What their lives were like?…. When I look into Hannah Edgerton’s (slightly scary) eyes, I find myself wondering what kind of woman she was. What if she liked some of the same things that I do, like John Keats or Jane Austen or a dark, misty night with Wilkie Collin’s mystery novel, The Woman In White in hand? Born in 1836, maybe her life was so filled with the have-to-do’s like sewing, washing, and ironing clothes, cooking and canning food, cleaning house, and keeping fires going in a cold northeastern home that she never had a chance to read.
The photo of Hannah’s daughter, Sarah Louis Edgerton Cadwell (born in 1872) lends itself to thoughts of a daughter who must have been well loved for this portrait to have been made. She stands tall and has a smile that seems to reveal confidence. She went on to marry an immigrant from Cornwall, England and one of her children was the grandmother of CiCi and me. How did she meet this newcomer to America? And did she work hard to recreate the foods that he loved from his native Cornwall? Did he have to stare into Hannah’s serious face and tell her that he was going to have to take their Sarah Louise away (shudder)…?
And then there is young Edith (our Grandmommy). I don’t know how old she is in either of these photos, but looking at them makes me realize how little I knew her really. However, she was sweet to pass these priceless family photos along to me. Below is a Cornish Pasty (pronounced pass-tee) recipe that Grandmommy gave to me when I was in college. I love that it could be a 100-year-old family recipe passed down from a great grandfather who brought it over as the favorite dish that his mother would make for him far away and back over the sea.
As I looked into Hannah’s (blaring) eyes or contemplated Sarah’s Mona Lisa-like smile, I wondered if the Lord might let us meet one day. Maybe then we could have that Keats talk.
CORNISH PASTIES
Make enough pie crust for as many pasties as you are going to make. I generally use left over pork roast when I make them.
Cut pork in cubes and cut potatoes in cubes. Chop onions.
Roll crust out for one crust pie and put some of the meat on half of crust then put potatoes, onions, parsley flakes, salt & pepper on top of meat. Lap crust over and seal. Punch a few holes in the top with fork and shape like a quarter moon.
Pie Crust
- 1 cup flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup Wesson oil
- 2 Tablespoons milk
- Mix with fork and roll between 2 pieces of waxed paper

Renovations
Now that we have painted the kitchen/dining room white and ripped down outdated wallpaper in the hallway and painted it tan with white trim, I think we are FINALLY done with renovations, at this house at least. That is unless we have to paint the guest room baby pink or baby blue....
Just kidding, no time soon:)

Random Monday Off of Work
And I got extremely lucky today! While it's been so foggy and chilly all summer (typical for SF), we have had our first summer day today when I'm not working; yay! It's 80 degrees without a cloud in the sky. So beautiful. I have spent the day hanging around other random folk who either don't work or are super cool hipsters with night jobs. This is what I am assume anyway when people don't appear to be working during Monday-Friday between 9 and 6. I've been walking around to cafes, shops, more cafes which mean a lot of soy lattes. :) I've even broken a sweat- craziness! I took a pic for Pamela's Girls to share a view I was enjoying next door to a cafe in Portrero Hill.
It sure be nice to have all the Pamela's Girls in San Francisco to enjoy this weather, coffee and the views with.

Baby B and the Farm Animals
Baby B had such a good time with his "big boy" friends Rivers and Royce at the fair this morning. There was a police officer with a blood hound, a firetruck, face painting, and food vendors, but nothing was as exciting to Baby B as the farm animals. He never left them the entire time, even to go see the blood hound. The owner of the animals joked that we were going to have to take the pony with us to get him to leave. He said that he brought them to birthday parties, even in January.
Which do you think Baby B would prefer... Mickey or live animals??? So far Mommy M is voting for Mickey over the dirty, stinky farm animals but unfortunately I think I know which one Baby B would like the most:(
Happy weekend Pamela's Girls!

The Music Row Ladies Golf Tournament 2010
The ladies in my office look forward each year to attending the Music Row Ladies Golf Tournament together, held at a beautiful Nashville country club just outside of town and benefitting a very worthy charity, United Cerebral Palsy.
It’s always a pleasant experience to have our group meet in the lobby, turn over phone & computer control to some helpers and head off into the sunshine. At least we always hope that it will be a day of sunshine. There have been a few tournaments that we all winded our ways home drenched to the bone.
I am definitely no golfer (sorry Daddy N), but will occasionally try my hand at putting in a few balls. If you have dollar bills in your pocket you can “bribe” a pro at each tee and he will drive the ball for you. I quite often will take advantage of that opportunity, but the thing I really like is to wheel about in a golf cart swigging diet coke or fruit tea from one of the companies donating drinks and waving to colleagues from other companies as I zoom past.
Every year I remember with a chuckle in my heart that my dad once told me that he took CiCi out golfing with him one day when she was a little girl. She begged to drive the golf cart and he finally relented and let her take the wheel. After driving for a few minutes she suddenly found herself heading toward a tree and in a moment of panic LEAPT from the cart leaving Daddy N sitting on the passenger side all alone. Hee-hee! I don’t honestly know whether Daddy N made that story up just to make me laugh but I really enjoy believing that it’s true!
We also can’t wait to see what kind of bag we will receive as we check in at the tournament. Whenever I go out of town now I always use a nice, autumn-colored paisley overnighter bag that I got at the 2008 tournament. One year we got a bag in colors that I knew Mommy M would like and I mailed it to her. Another year it was a rolling bag made of a plastic material that looked like cow hide and was edged in pink – that one was a bit bizarre! Inside of each bag they put all kinds of “goodies” or as Uncle R likes to refer to them – little tchotchkes. These might be t-shirts with different recording artist or music company names on the back, letter openers, hand sanitizer pocket bottles, new CDs, sewing kits, lotions, etc. This year the bag was a simple turquoise and brown burlap bag – not extremely exciting – but it had an umbrella and iTunes card inside along with the normal geegaws and I was happy to get those.
Well, I have to say that even though I don’t get into the actual golfing part of the tournament in a serious way, I still feel like my dad is smiling down at me…. And maybe hoping that I’ll sink a 20’ putt in honor of him!

Baby B's Party Invitation (just a few months early)
I know... go ahead and say it! I am officially CRAZY! I blame it all on SanFran S because she asked me to set the date for Baby B's birthday party so she can make arrangements. That got me thinking... which led to me designing the invitation. I know, I've got problems, but doesn't it look cute?
On a more serious note, please pray for Daddy L in the morning. He is taking his last certification test at 10:00. It is supposed to be very hard and it is very important.
Happy Thursday!

My latest art project...
Scripture in Isaiah
Amazingly, the answer was given to me in my daily reading of Isaiah this week:
"The good men perish; the godly die before their time and no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to realize that God is taking them away from evil days ahead. For the godly who die shall rest in peace." –Isaiah 57:1-2
It really gave me a peace of mind and an answer to my prayers. I think this is such a wonderful scripture to comfort us when we miss our loved ones who are no longer with us.

A Photo of Pamela
We spent Saturday afternoon sorting through old photos and I found this one of Anma and Granddaddy. I couldn't believe how much SanFran S resembles her... AMAZING!
And Auntie J, don't get too sad looking at our beach pictures because it was rainy so we were only on the beach for a few minutes. We laughed about taking all of those photos because it would look like we had a long day on the beach... but you actually didn't miss much beach time.
I love you Pamela's Girls!

Our Musical Week Despite The Trauma… Last Week
Well – as I write this it is very sad to think that Uncle R & I were supposed to be sitting with the Pamela’s Girls down in SC at this very moment. (Sigh) But we are immensely grateful that the Lord took such excellent care of Uncle R – guiding the doctors & technicians to discover what was causing him to feel so bad and providing excellent care with the medicine that he needed. He is feeling better every day but it is taking a bit of time to get his strength back after living on IV, ice chips and popsicles over the past weekend.
And because of all of the trauma – it ended up being the first week that I have missed a Pamela’s Girl posting… sorry about that!
In the midst of all of our worry about how Uncle R was feeling – we actually did have an enjoyable “musical week” with two opportunities to hear our good friend, Pat Terry. First Pat sang at a benefit concert at our church to raise money for a family who lost their home and most of their possessions in the flood last April and then the next night at the iconic, world famous music venue in Nashville called The Bluebird Café. The Bluebird is famous for hosting “writer nights”. On a typical writers night several writers will perch on chairs or stools in the center of the room and share their hits and sometimes offer songs they may hope will be hits. It’s always really interesting to hear a songwriter sing a song and hear his own take on a song that you have heard a hundred times by a recording artist on the radio. There are also many nights that feature new writers just hoping beyond hope that someone will hear them and sign them up for a publishing deal.
Both Uncle R and I love Pat’s music & the well-crafted songs that he writes. It’s always a treat to hear him perform and we have our favorite songs that we hope to hear each time we do. It was an additional special treat at the benefit concert to hear Pat sing his well known “That’s The Way” – the wonderful wedding song that he sang at our wedding twenty years ago. The concert for the Farrell Family also included Christian artists, Amy Grant, Susan Ashton and several others that we have not had the chance to hear in person for a long time and the whole thing was skillfully organized by my dear friend LLL.
A bonus from having Pat play two concert dates here in town is that he & his lovely wife (who I like to call The Countess because of her regal & graceful mien) spent a couple of nights with us and we had extra chatting and catching up time at the house. We thoroughly enjoy our time with this creative and loving couple and greatly value our friendship that has now spanned over many years.
Last week I also experienced an “in office” showcase at the music publishing company where I work to allow staff and select industry persons hear a newly signed writer with our company, Carly Pearce. She is a fresh and beautiful new face to the music industry and has a voice that perfectly suits her country/bluegrass roots. This type of performance is very helpful to other signed writers at our office because they can listen and get a feel for whether they might be a good match for co-writing with Carly. Industry officials there might also have suggestions for career development for this young writer and the staff always enjoys hearing someone that we will all support with our work efforts. It’s very interesting and quite useful at the same time.
I miss and love my Pamela’s Girls - this week especially – and Uncle R does too. We will keep looking for another time to travel to SC to see everyone and have us all together.
